Falling in Love with the Moth Faerie Prince: A Sweet Romantic Comedy by Camilla Evergreen: Review & Themes ★★★★

Falling in Love with the Moth Faerie Prince: A Sweet Romantic Comedy by Camilla Evergreen After your sister finds her soulmate in a chihuahua shifter, and she spends her days curled up as a fluffy Pomeranian, you wonder if everything will be fixed if you go into her new world. When you hit the prince of your sister's new home, a moth faerie prince—with your pink car—you begin to believe that this might be the opportunity for your harrowing thoughts to stop.  Artistry and Craft Falling in Love with the Moth Faerie Prince may just be my favourite book in the (PARA)NORMAL series so. Firstly, I feel like in this novel, more than the other two, the author truly humanizes the fae, which is a feat considering the beautiful job she did with the other books. The parts that I found to be an improvement in Falling in Love with My Chihuahua Shifter—like the meta-references or bringing real franchises in from the "real" world—I found to be even better i...

The Dragon's Promise by Elizabeth Lim: Book Review & Themes ★★★

Book Review: The Dragon's Promise by Elizabeth Lim

Cover of The Dragon's Promise by Elizabeth Lim

The Dragon's Promise by Elizabeth Lim, the second book in the Six Crimson Cranes duology, plunges the reader back into an enchanting, high-stakes world filled with dragons, magical mirrors, and haunted islands.

Craft & Artistry

The Dragon's Promise wastes no time in escalating the stakes, immediately putting the fate of the world in peril and threatening to throw all of creation into chaos. Our main characters face unforeseen obstacles at every turn, relying on their wits and the occasional intervention from friendly magical beings to escape.

While this is a good book, it isn't without its flaws. My main critique, which also applied to the first installment, is the rushed pace. This often makes scenes and transitions feel choppy or abrupt. I also found that the middle of the novel dragged, making it tough to maintain a consistent reading momentum, despite a strong finish.

The food descriptions are still great, and Elizabeth's world-building skills shine as different realms are introduced, adding layers of imaginative texture to the reader's experience (★★★).

Themes & Messages

Forgiveness remains a central theme, specifically when exploring the complex space between holding a grudge and letting go. The book thoughtfully engages with the difficult question: "How do I forgive someone who's hurt me?" The protagonist navigates the nuance of her feelings, providing the room for this emotional journey.

A lovely light romance continues to develop, overcoming strongholds of pride and bureaucracy. It’s wonderful to read a book that portrays such a warm, respectful, and healing romantic relationship.

The East Asian mythology that forms the core of the plot is further developed with the introduction of beings like demons and dragons. This offers a fascinating look into general East Asian cultures that conceptualize the supernatural differently from the Western paradigm. The author’s portrayal of demons as "chaos creatures," for instance, resonates with ancient myths, similar to how figures like the Leviathan are referenced in the Bible as primeval serpentine beings that are untamed forces only under the control of God. This historical concept shared by many cultures stands as an enriching contrast to the more simplistic modern "myth" in Western interpretations.

⚠ The following paragraph contains a minor spoiler ⚠

There was one moment that veered away from the book’s thematic logic of good versus evil, when the author attempted to humanize the demons. In my view, this took away from the strength of the very foundation the book had relied on. It weakened the moral clarity the story had so carefully built up. There is also a point in the book where one of the characters is oppressed by an evil spirit because of possession. This is important if you are a christian to know before committing to reading this book. (★★★).

Final Thoughts

Despite some of the book's downfalls, I'm glad I kept reading it. I love how the author tackled heavy subjects in approachable ways. I can confirm that the ending was moving and even made me cry at one point. I would recommend it to only some readers as there is need for discernment when reading, especially when it concerns supernatural beings or similar themes. Overall all The Dragon's Promise is three stars.
